Fort Pickens

Fort Pickens was very near the campground and the Kellys and I got to do a free tour with a guide.

The Fort was established to protect Pensacola bay and was used until after WW2 when the artillery became obsolete.

The Fort is very large and most of the buildings are still intact leaving some interesting ruins to explore.

Geronimo and his family were held here for 18 months of their captivity.

Hallways and chambers go on and on.  The lime from the mortar is leaching into the chambers and creating stalactites in some areas.  I plan to come back here in 100 years and see if these chambers have become real caves.

Can you hear them marching during morning drill--hands slapping against gun butts, sergeants shouting orders, revelry on the trumpet as the flag is raised?
